At 10:15 PM ET, I'll be on The Kevin Ross Show to discuss Prop 8 (including the latest news about the CA Supreme Court review of the proposition's constitutionality). Click the icon to listen online or call in at (347) 945-5939. There's also a live chat there if you want to participate that way.
However, the main topic on the show (it begins at 10PM ET) tonight is Michelle Obama. Or, rather, Michelle Obama's posterior. Take a look at Erin Aubry Kaplan's post at 3 Brothers and A Sister. She has set off a firestorm of commentary in the black blogosphere with Finally, A First Lady That Loo...
Lincoln was no partisanRumproast 11/19 9:07 pm
(Alternate title: Lieberplaque)
Since Obama is talking about the wisdom of Lincoln and his willingness to appoint political rivals to his cabinet, perhaps it's useful to look at what some have said was a major deficit of Lincoln's: his inability to quickly dispense with those who weren't serving the mission.
You see, there's a story (controversial among historians) that, in its condensed version, goes something like this: The Civil War would have ended in 1862--and hundreds of thousands of dead young men would have been spared--if Lincoln hadn’...
BREAKING: WGA Files For Arbitration Against Producers For Not Keeping Up On New Media ResidualspaidContent.org 11/19 9:02 pm
And so it starts again: The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is planning to file for arbitration against the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP), alleging that the producers are not complying with the new contract that was negotiated after a prolonged strike during the winter of 2007-08. The full WGA statement is here.
The points in WGA's new complaint:
-- That the media companies part of AMPTP are not paying residuals for writers' work that is reused on new media. Of course this was the main issue of the WGA strike.
-- WGA is "embarking on an aggressive contract enfor...
Unofficial Half-Life Remake Looking Prettier By The Year [Black Mesa]Kotaku, the Gamer’s Guide 11/19 8:40 pm
Welcome to my third annual post on new media for the Half-Life fan-created remake Black Mesa (formerly known as Black Mesa: Source). It doesn't appear to be any closer to release than it was when I wrote about it in 2006 and 2007, but the new screen shots, released on the original game's ten year anniversary, are worth a peek. According to official Black Mesa word, the mod no longer requires Counter-Strike: Source, as the project has moved to The Orange Box version of Valve's Source engine. Any Source-based game will let you play Black Mesa, should it ever be released. That means the new media...

The Hive's back, well only to indulge in a bit of frankly, wanky, self-congratulation.
Expect more of this kind of told-you-so stuff from elements of the blogosphere. These authors cling to historical grievances in a way that reminds me of petty teenage rivalries.
What's odd about this piece however, is that it's not about trade, a subject on which the Hive's principal author is clearly expert,...

Criticism Is Not Anti-Religious Bigotry: Mormons, Gays, and TaxesFannie's Room 11/19 5:42 pm
Yesterday, I wrote about how lawful protesting does not constitute intolerance, bigotry, or censorship. Today, I want to discuss the running theme in some "marriage defense" corners that it now constitutes "anti-religious bigotry" to protest a church's involvement in political and social affairs. While many LGBT rights advocates have been critiquing anti-gay interpretations of Christianity for years, much ado has been made over the fact that many in the LGBT community are angry over the Mormon Church's involvement in the Yes on 8 movement. This particular Christian denomination was rather ins...

Obama and the BlogosphereOpen Left 11/19 5:21 pm
Since it has been the subject of multiple front-page articles today on Open Left, and since I will be on Radio Times this Friday discussing the subject, I feel the need to weigh in on the relationship between President-elect Obama and the progressive blogosphere.
The long and short of my view is this: it's all true. Everything you are writing and / or thinking about the progressive blogosphere is correct, almost no matter what you are writing or thinking. There is one exception: if you are arguing that the progressive blogosphere is any one thing, holds any one position, or represents any sing...

I'm sure this is an unintended consequence and it certainly does not make up for the fact that I couldn't read PittGirl's opinion this morning, but I speculate that the entire Burghosphere received a little bump from the MSM yesterday. The Post-Gazette published a story yesterday afternoon and Pop City and the Trib went to press with it this morning. Additionally, the Post-Gazette and Trib both published editorials. Should You Advertise Online'K Street Cafe 11/19 3:30 pm
In the continuing debate over new media vs. old media—what’s online vs. what’s offline—the sub-debate about advertising is instructive.
On one hand, online ads are vulnerable to the tyranny of choice. The metrics can be overwhelming, the jargon can be off-putting and success can be mistaken for failure. Moreover, unlike traditional ad buys, online campaigns demand continuous monitoring and fine-tuning.
On the other hand, if you’re tired of one-off shots in the dark—where your one-page spread for life insurance runs opposite to an article on video games, or your spot for an S...
Someone isn't happy about Obama making nice with HillaryAMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth 11/19 3:27 pm
Over at Huff Post, David Bromwich argues that Obama shouldn't be so fast to make up with Hillary after everything she did to him during the primaries. First his take, then mine:It is said that Barack Obama has read Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, Team of Rivals, about the war cabinet of Abraham Lincoln. It is said Obama wants to constitute his cabinet out of former rivals because he liked the book and he models himself on Lincoln.Implausible as it sounds, this is the best explanation anyone has given of the offer of the position of secretary of state to Hillary Clinton. Lincoln took William Sewa...

It arose in response to widespread dissatisfaction regarding the lac...

It’s kind of like staring at a car crash sitting on the side of the road. You know you shouldn’t be gawking. There are some people there who are having a very bad day. But still, there is this morbid fascination with the very fact of a crash, with all the bent fenders, flashing lights on the police cars and maybe even an ambulance or two. You think to yourself, “Wow, how did that happen' That’s terrible! I’m glad it wasn’t me.”That’s sort of how I feel about the beginnings of what looks to be a crack-up of the modern Republican Party. It’s kind of amazing to watch, esp...
